Running without sophomore standout Caleb Mitchell, the Southwest Trojans nailed down a berth in the MSHSAA state championships by taking second behind Springfield Catholic in the Class 2, District 6 cross country meet at Lake Springfield on Saturday.
Logan Pendergraft led the Trojans with his seventh place finish, followed by Dustin Breedlove in eighth, Kyle Buttrum in 13th, Luke Hackett in 14th and Codie Harmon in 20th. Southwest squeezed out Buffalo by 12 points for the second place trophy.
"With only five guys running, there was no room for error," said Southwest Coach Lee Stubblefield. "Everyone understood their responsibility, and they delivered in a big way."
Charlotte Buttrum, Southwest's lone entry in the girls division, sailed to a fourth place finish and easily qualified for the state meet. She earned All-District honors, as did Pendergraft, Breedlove, Buttrum and Hackett in the boys division.
The MSHSAA state cross country meet will be held at its traditional site on Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City on Saturday, Nov. 4.
