Wildcat strikers head to districts
The Cassville Wildcat soccer squad closed out its regular season schedule on the road with a 1-0 win over New Covenant last Thursday and a 2-2 tie against Joplin on Monday.
The CHS strikers' season record now stands at 16-5-2 going into district play.
Against the New Covenant Warriors, the Wildcats faced off against a team they had played two times before. A much improved New Covenant squad limited Cassville to one goal.
Uziel Franco scored his ___ goal of the season on an assist by Ryan Schlichtman. Anthony Larson recorded another shutout in goal.
Cassville then travelled to Joplin to take on the Class 3 Eagles.
Joplin scored first at the three-minute mark when senior John Duncan headed the ball into the net off a Blake Aggus assist. The teams battled throughout the first 40 minutes, and the score remained 1-0 at the half.
The Eagles scored their second goal of the night shortly after the start of the second half on an Aggus goal off a Duncan assist.
Despite trailing 2-0, the Wildcats continued to fight, and in the last 10 minutes of play, scored two goals to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Franco scored Cassville's first goal of the night on an assist from Nate Evans. Schlichtman scored the equalizer with only three minutes remaining in the game. His rocket shot into the back of the net came off an assist by Mathew Angel. The goal marked Schlichtman's 30th of the season.
In overtime, Cassville dominated but neither team was able to score, and the game ended 2-2 after a pair of 10-minute periods.
Evans and Chris Born were phenomenal on defense and were able to contain a powerful Joplin offense. Larson also had several key saves to keep the game in check.
Coach Terry Jamieson also noted the play of Hector Valenzuela, stating the senior had "his best game of the season." Senior Jeremiah Harris also had a strong game at midfield.
The Wildcats have earned the second seed in the District 5 boys soccer tournament, which will be held at Willard High School. West Plains is the tournament's top seed.
