Southwest defeated Verona in high school volleyball action last week in two sets to improve its Ozark 7 Conference record to 3-0.
Meagan Colf, a senior middle blocker, and Summer Stephens, a junior outside hitter, combined for 15 kills in the victory. Senior setter Kayla Ferguson added 17 assists as the Lady Trojans improved their overall record to 12-4-1.
"We were not very sharp, but we'll take any win against a conference team," said Coach Steve Voyak. "We must improve our consistency if we are going to be successful in the conference and later in the district."
Voyak said the Lady Trojans enter a tough stretch in their schedule.
"We play Pierce City and Wheaton in the same week, so we will know exactly where we are as the season starts to wind down," Voyak said. "To beat either of these teams we'll have to play at a very high level and keep mistakes to a minimum."
Southwest also plays a road match at Hurley next week.
In JV action, the Lady Trojans rallied for a three-set win over Verona to also improve to 3-0 in league play.
"We have won six in a row, but the girls still lack the consistency they will need to win the conference championship," Voyak said. "They will also be tested with matches against Pierce City, Hurley and Wheaton. We upset Wheaton last year and had a chance to win the conference, but lost our last two matches. Hopefully, the girls learned from that."
