Monett defeated the Cassville soccer 'Cats 4-1 in the opener for both teams last Thursday at Monett.
Junior Ryan Schlichtman scored the lone goal for Cassville in the 33rd minute of play, and senior Hector Valenzuela was credited with the assist. The Wildcats led 1-0 at half-time but the day unraveled in the second half as Monett put in four unanswered goals.
"We did not play as a team, and moreover, we simply did not compete well after we took the lead," said Head Coach Terry Jamieson. "I can see that we have the potential to be very good by the end of the season but clearly we are young in places and seemed tentative under fire during the game."
The Cassville varsity squad will play in the Christian County Men's Soccer Tournament this week. The Wildcats' first game will be against Nixa this Thursday, Sept. 6 at 5:45 p.m. at the Ozark field. On Saturday, Cassville is scheduled to play Lee's Summit West at 10 a.m. at Nixa. First, third and fifth place games will be played on Saturday afternoon at Ozark.
The Wildcat JV squad will travel to Springfield on Friday, Sept. 6 for a first round tournament game in the New Covenant Invitational at 6 p.m. against the hosts. The young 'Cats will then play Greenwood at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
"I want all of our players to get plenty of playing time over the next two weeks and better ourselves," said Jamieson.
"If we ever want to get back to the level we were at last year, we will need to develop lots of young players," Jamieson added.
