Demolition Derby should draw crowds

Thursday, September 7, 2006

Huge crowds are expected to converge on Bill Hailey Rodeo Arena in Cassville on Saturday, Sept. 9 to catch all the action of the Cassville Rotary Club's fourth annual Demolition Derby. The exciting event will begin at 7 p.m.

Each year, the derby grows in popularity. This time around, one heat for compact cars will be added. Organizers hope this category will attract additional drivers interested in capturing a $300 prize.

The promoter for this year's derby is Grandstand Attractions, Inc., of Mechanicsburg, Ill. A number of local drivers are expected to compete this year against other drivers from the four-state area.

According to Herb Primrose, one of the Rotary Club members promoting the event, the cars entered in a demolition derby are usually older and have been recovered from salvage yards. Drivers then make a number of modifications necessary to qualify for the event.

The derby includes several heats of five to 10 cars each. The last three cars still running after each heat are eligible to drive in the championship heat, which will determine the top drivers on the night. Cash prizes are awarded to heat winners as well as the top finishers.

Cars and drivers can be sponsored by organizations, businesses or by the drivers themselves.

Bill Hailey Arena is located north of Cassville of off Business 37. Parking and seating are available on the north and south sides of the arena. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged.

"Come out this Saturday for an exciting evening and see these 'gladiators' duel to the finish," said Primrose.
