Back-to-school enrollment shows increase

Total enrollment in Barry County's seven school districts showed a slight increase at the start of the 2006-07 school year. These districts are serving a total of 6,773 students, which is 63 more than last year.

The Cassville R-IV School holds onto its distinction as the largest district in Barry County with 2,101 students enrolled at the start of the new year. Monett is close behind with a total student enrollment of 2,074.

Cassville enrollment increased by 24 students compared to last year's enrollment of 2,077 at the start of the 2005-07 school year. Monett's total student population rose by a mere 8 students from its enrollment of 2,066 at the beginning of last year.

Southwest R-V School District saw the greatest increase in its student numbers. Enrollment increased by 7.6 percent, growing from 852 in 2005-06 to 917 in 2006-07.

Other districts who experienced small increases in enrollment were Exeter with a total of 340 students as compared to 334 last year and Purdy, whose enrollment grew from 726 last year to 737 this year.

The Shell Knob and Wheaton R-III school districts saw their enrollment decrease at the start of the new school year. Shell Knob's total enrollment dropped 15 percent from 193 at the start of the 2005-06 school year to 164 this year. Wheaton's enrollment decreased by 4.7 percent, going from 462 last year to 440 this year.

A grade-by-grade break-down of back-to-school enrollment figures for each school district are listed below.

• Cassville: preschool, 53; kindergarten, 154; first grade, 155; second grade, 158; third grade, 139; fourth grade, 133; fifth grade, 144; sixth grade, 153; seventh grade, 163; eighth grade, 172; ninth grade, 191; 10th grade, 180; 11th grade, 167; and 12th grade, 139.

• Monett: preschool, 68; kindergarten, 204; first grade, 160; second grade; 178; third grade, 135; fourth grade, 153; fifth grade, 129; sixth grade, 133; seventh grade, 136; eighth grade, 161; ninth grade, 185; 10th grade, 154; 11th grade, 140; and 12th grade, 138.

• Southwest: preschool, 17; kindergarten, 63; first grade, 76; second grade, 84; third grade, 63; fourth grade, 58; fifth grade, 74; sixth grade, 69; seventh grade, 66; eighth grade, 71; ninth grade, 74; 10th grade, 76; 11th grade, 69; and 12th grade, 57.

• Purdy: kindergarten, 57; first grade, 61; second grade, 51; third grade, 60; fourth grade, 61; fifth grade, 59; sixth grade, 66; seventh grade, 58; eighth grade, 73; ninth grade, 47; 10th grade, 63; 11th grade, 47; and 12th grade, 34.

• Wheaton: kindergarten, 32; first grade, 33; second grade, 37; third grade, 34; fourth grade, 31; fifth grade, 31; sixth grade, 37; seventh and eighth grade, 71; and high school, 133.

In releasing enrollment information, school officials noted that all enrollment numbers could change.
