A total of 12 Southwest High School volleyball players recently attended a summer camp in Rolla.
The varsity and JV played 15 matches over two days to help prepare for the upcoming season. It marked the third straight season the Lady Trojan volleyball team has participated in this camp.
Tasha Barnett, Traisha Conner, Sam Elkins, Marisa Fletcher, Jennifer Finuf, Jennifer Hendrix, Amanda Lay, Stacie Pendergraft, Kayla Petty, Briana Stephens, Summer Stephens and Chasidi Utter represented the two Southwest teams.
"It was a great experience for the girls," said Coach Steve Voyak. "We played at five different facilities, including the University of Missouri at Rolla, and saw some great competition."
Southwest competed against teams from Berryhill, Clinton, Fatima, Jefferson City, Kansas City, Laquay, Miller, New Haven, Pierce City, Salem, Smithville and Sullivan.
The varsity highlight was a three-set victory over Sullivan in the single-elimination tournament. The JV rallied to tie Jefferson City Helias in pool play after trailing 22-15 in the second game.
"It's a great way to end the summer after going through workouts and playing in a shootout in Sparta," Voyak said.
Volleyball practice begins Monday, Aug. 7, according to Voyak.
The first week of practice will be from 9 a.m. to noon in the high school gym.
