The YMCA Recreation and Gymnastics Center of Cassville recently hosted its first annual "Y not Tri" Sprint Triathlon on Saturday, July 15.
The event, which attracted about 20 competitors, consisted of a 400-yard swim, a 10.3-mile bike ride and a 2.5-mile run.
Several local athletes competed in the team division of the competition. This year's first place team included Debbie O'Neal (swim), Bill Shiveley (bike) and Nick Schlichtman (run). The team finished the course in a time of 57:55.
Second place honors went to the team of Rosanna Born (swim), Dan Philbrick (bike) and Tammy Holder (swim), who completed the course in a time of 1:01.05.
The third place team of Karen Shilling (swim), Tom Harris (bike) and Jeremiah Harris (run) finished the course in a time of 1:04:16.
Individual triathlon results are listed below.
15-29 male division: Dustin Miller, 21, of Joplin, first place, 53:33; Stephen O'Neal, 27, of Rogers, Ark., second place, 57:18; and Cameron Efurd, 15, of Rogers, Ark., third place, 59:04.
15-29 female division: Courtney Efurd, 15, of Rogers, Ark., first place, 1:01.22; and Ashley Hendrix, 21, of Washburn, second place, 1:07.42.
30-49 male division: Todd Selvey, 35, of Pierce City, first place, 1:00.05; Steve Sexton, 35, of Monett, second place, 1:12.43; Joel Kahl, 40, of Rogers, Ark., third place, 1:16.25; and Jeff O'Bryan, 35, of Joplin, fourth place, 1:18.55.
30-49 female division: Becky Efurd, 41, of Rogers, Ark., first place, 1:02.30.
50 plus male division: Randy Featherston, 55, of Rogers, Ark., first place, 1:06.55.
"We would also like to send out a special thank you to our volunteers and our sponsors for making this a wonderful event," said Larry Boswell, director of the local YMCA programs.
Event sponsors included: Wal-Mart, Subway, Radio Shack, Logos and More/The Trophy Place, Brattin Insurance, Jerry Blankinship, CPA, Sports World, Lewis and Clark Outfitters and the City of Cassville.
Volunteers included: Tina Rasmussen, Michelle Holenda, Christie Gray, Jamie Porter, Chris Born and Kara Hendrix.
Boswell said the YMCA plans to host another sprint triathlon next summer.
