Cross country camp planned at Southwest

Friday, July 14, 2006

The seventh annual Southwest cross country camp will begin on Monday, July 17 as prospective Trojan runners begin their summer training in earnest.

"We have traditionally held our camp the last two full weeks in July so that runners can then continue their training on into the school season," said Coach Lee Stubblefield, whose summer training philosophy has led to a state championship and three other state trophies since the first camp back in 2000.

The full camp will run July 17-21 and July 24-28. Camp sessions will begin daily at 7 a.m., starting at the middle school gym. A complete camp schedule will be distributed on the first day. Runners will be grouped by conditioning level and ability for each session.

"Most of our high school runners are already training," said Coach Stubblefield, "but I don't expect the middle school kids to start running until camp."

There is no charge for the camp, but participants must be Southwest students to meet Missouri State High School Activities Association regulations. Camp T-shirts will be available for purchase.
