Community showed support for band

Friday, July 14, 2006

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank the community of Cassville for the support shown the Cassville Wildcat Band fireworks stand during the build-up to the Fourth of July. Our students had a tremendous opportunity to experience retail sales from the other side of the counter by manning a fireworks stand located across from Wildcat Rentals for a 10-day period. The band students are engaged in a two-year project to raise funds for a proposed band trip to Orlando, Fla., and a performance at Disney World in the spring of 2008. The community support really helps them toward their goal.

Our community should be very proud of the Band Booster organization. President Ron Frieze was the inspiration for the project along with his wife, Jennifer. Vice-president Jamie Carlson and her husband, Jimmie, treasurer Karen Roberts and her husband, Darrell, and secretary Rhonda Cooper and her husband, Chris, all put in many hours in this 24-hour-per-day, 10-day fundraising event. There were so many band parents that deserve recognition for their service to the band program. Parents came after work, during their vacation from work, guided students into understanding retail sales, kept them on task, priced items, stacked, stored, ordered, worked the cash register, promoted and loved their experience without a whimper. Other band parents contributing long hours were Ron and Carol Taylor, Renee Callahan, Mike and Marci Garrett, Paula Dupont, Kim Hukill, Karen Allen and Brenda Russell. I am deeply grateful to these parent/community members for their service to music education.

The list does not stop there, however. Special thanks to our local McDonald's and manager Lee Schroeder for providing breakfast for all the morning crew on several occasions as well as ice for our water coolers. Pizza Hut provided pizza for workers on the July Fourth. Bill Shiveley of Barry Electric hung our banners. Mike Schlichtman of Baywash Car Wash gave a free car wash to anyone that purchased over $100 in fireworks. We can all thank Mike for all the clean cars in town. What a tremendous show of support. I hope I haven't left anyone off of this list.

Many students put in days, evenings and nights working our stand. They included: Kyle Dupont, Rayna Stouder, Austin Morris, Shalliah Allen, TJ Frieze, Brandy Johnson, Austin Carlson, Gabby Vincent, Jacob Hukill, Billy Wright, Mary Beth Allen, Jacob Gouvion, Jessica Russell, Lindsey Fohn, Nia Gianino, Melissa Garrett, Chelsea Willyard, Jake Elliott, Sam Hartman, Michael Rush, Amber, Allison Gentry and Bryan Schroeder.

One person assisted that is new to our community and that is Mr. Mike Driskill, our new assistant band director. Mr. Driskill stood in for me for several days even though his contract had not begun yet. A tip of the hat to you Mr. Driskill!

I'm sure that I have missed mentioning some names and if I have, please let me know. I want everyone to know how much you are appreciated. With people like this working together our band program is going to continue to blossom.

Again, thank you Cassville for your support and we hope to see you again next year at our fireworks stand. We are looking forward to rewarding your support through our production of "The Chronicles of Narnia" at all our home football games. Come out and cheer the band on. I am so proud to be a teacher in your community. Thank you for you Cassville!

Sincerely,

Steven Lyons
