Velma Irene Smith, 90, of Springfield, formerly of Cassville, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2006, in Maranatha Village, Springfield.

She was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Cassville, the daughter of Henry and Edna (Taylor) Starkey. On Jan. 16, 1935, in Cassville, she was united in marriage to Rev. Loren Smith, who preceded her in death April 21, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Naomi and Glenna; six brothers; a grandson, Jake Stockton, and two great grandchildren.

survivors include: three sons, Darrel Smith and his wife, Vera, of Aurora, Dennis Smith and his wife, Shirley, of Lake Lure, N. C., and Randall Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Amarillo, Texas; four daughters, Freda Ray and her husband, Leon, of Aurora, Maxine Stockton and her husband, Duane, of Jenkins, Willadean Lane and her husband, Kenneth, of Springfield, and Geneva Dutton and her husband, Rodney, of Republic; one brother, Wayne Starkey, of Fulton; two sisters, Adine Gowin of Fulton, and Marjorie Finn, of Rolla; 22 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

She and her family moved from Cassville to Shell Knob when she was around six years old. After their marriage, she and Loren moved to California to work in the logging woods where she worked along side her husband. In the winter months they would return to Cassville. Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Pastor Rex Mooneyham and Pastor Mark Lewis conducted the services. Burial was at Mineral Springs Cemetery, Cassville.
