Access to Barry County's list of registered sex offenders has improved thanks to the Barry County Sheriff Department's new website.
Citizens can now click onto www.barrycountysheriff.org and find an alphabetized list of sex offenders on-line. The listing also includes photographs, addresses, the nature of the offender's crime, the date of the crime and the number of victims.
Steve Reid, of Cassville, created the new website, donating time and expertise.
"Steve built this website like we wanted it," said Sheriff Mick Epperly. "He spent of lot of hours working on this."
Epperly said the website was created as a public service and providing on-line access to the local sex offenders list was a top priority.
"The public can go there and look if they have concerns about someone," said Epperly. "I think the public needs this, and I'm glad we've got it done."
The sheriff said the website would be updated as new sex offenders register with his office. The website will also be expanded in coming months to include additional information about the department.
According to the website, information in the sex offenders registry "refers only to persons who have been convicted of, found guilty of or pleaded guilty to committing or attempting to commit sexual offenses and may not reflect the entire criminal history of a particular individual. Offenders required to register for crimes of kidnapping, felonious restraint or child abuse may not be listed on this web site."
The site also warns users that information provided in the registry "may not be used to harass or threaten sex offenders or their families."
