Southwest Lady Trojans brought home the championship trophy from the eighth grade division of the Purdy Middle School Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

Southwest won four of six games and finished ahead of Exeter, Purdy and Shell Knob. Stacie Pendergraft led Southwest with 14 kills, while Heather Skidmore converted 21 of 22 serves. Marisa Fletcher added 12 assists for the Lady Trojans, who improved their overall record to 4-1-2.

"The tournament was a very competitive tournament," said Southwest Coach Steve Voyak. "Our girls just made a few more plays than the other teams. They really wanted to win after losing their first match of the season earlier in the week to Hurley."

In the seventh grade division, Southwest won two of six games and finished third behind tourney champ Purdy and runner-up Exeter. Britney Mulkey made 16 of 17 serves, while Tiffany Shockley had 12 passes to target.

"The younger girls have been working so hard, so it was nice to see them win a match against Shell Knob and then play well against Purdy and Exeter tougher," Voyak said.

Earlier in the week, the eighth graders split matches, losing to Hurley in three games and defeating Purdy in two. Pendergraft led the Lady Trojans against Hurley with 33 passes to target, while Amanda Lay added eight kills. Setter Chasidi Utter contributed 13 assists as Southwest suffered its first loss of the season.

In the B match, Southwest made 36 of 44 serves, including 13 aces, three each by Courtney Perryman, Nicki Black and Britney Mulkey.

Against Purdy, Southwest won the eighth grade match but lost in seventh grade action. Pendergraft led the eighth graders with six kills, while Utter added 11 passes to target. In the seventh grade match, Shockley converted 10 of 11 serves and added nine passes to target.
