Della Mae Young, 96, of Cassville, passed away Friday, March 10, 2006, in her home.
She was born March 23, 1909, in Crestline, Kan., the daughter of Frederick G. and Mary Elizabeth (Nichols) Buchanan. On May 5, 1960, in Bisby, Ariz., she was united in marriage to Charles A. Young, who preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 1981. She was also preceded in death by six sisters.
She is survived by an older sister, Gladys Robertson, of Joplin.
She was raised in and around Picher, Okla., and Columbus, Kan. She received her education in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School around 1928, just before the depression hit. After graduation, she taught grade school for several years. She was a seamstress by trade. She sewed for a company in California that made clothing for movie stars such as Barbara Streisand and Joan Crawford. She also found time to make all her own clothes, as well as, most of the clothes for her sisters. After her retirement, Della sewed clothing for dolls and donated her work to the needy. For a while, she was known as "The Doll Lady" in Cassville, where she lived the last 30 years.
