The basketball season for Barry County teams is over. The Wheaton, Southwest, Purdy and Exeter boys basketball squads were defeated in the opening round of district play and the Southwest Lady Trojans bowed out in district semi-final action.
The Lady Trojans faced off against Pierce City, the eventual district champs, and fell 49-70 in the semi-final Class 2, District 11 game at Diamond last Thursday.
Southwest was led by Jessica Mitchell with 15, Kayla Ferguson with 13 and Jennifer Finuf with 11. Other Lady Trojan scorers were Brittany Clifton and Stacy Hobbs with 4 each and Chelsea Sneed with 2.
The Lady Eagles dominated the game from the start, outscoring Southwest 20-6 in the first quarter. Although the Lady Trojans kept the game closer in the final three stanzas, they were unable to make up the early deficit.
In the Class 2, District 11 boys tournament at Diamond, Southwest, Purdy and Wheaton were ousted from district play by falling in the opening round.
Wheaton lost to Diamond 45-48. The game was tied 21-21 at the half, and then in the third quarter, the Wildcats were able to climb on top by outscoring the Bulldogs 12-8. In the end, Billings held onto the win.
Chris Musick led the Bulldogs' scoring attack with 16. He was followed by Craig Davidson with 13, Jon Pendergraft with 9, Jakob Hughes with 5 and Tylor Bigham with 2.
Wheaton ended their season with a 4-19 record.
The Trojans of Southwest has a disappointing district showing and fell 30-54 to Billings. Billings outscored Southwest in three of the four quarters to earn a big win.
Southwest scorers were Jesse Shockley and Dave Paul with 7 each, Ramie Woods and Chris Ellison with 6 each and Chris Paul with 4. The Trojans ended the year with an overall record of 10-14.
The Purdy Eagles fell to Pierce City 29-54. The Pierce City squad went on to claim the district crown.
The leading point scorer for Purdy was Josh Richardson with 8. Others contributing to the point total were Derek Dailey 7, Spencer Terry and Mason Roller 4 each and Ryan Veith and Corey Moller 3 each.
In Class 1, District 4 action at Aurora, the Exeter Tigers lost to Chadwick 30-69.
Exeter scorers were Tyler Henderson 9, Chase Higgs 7, Keith Hayworth 6 and Ian Russell and Colt Higgs 4 each.
