I feel that this issue with the Monett Rural Fire Department watching a building burn has been blown totally out of proportion. This is not the first time that this has happened, and it may not be the last.
I can remember a home burning about 25 years ago and the department had to stand across the road and watch, because that family was not a member. Why are we making such a big issue of this now? Nothing was done then by that family; they understood that because they were not members that the firefighters were helpless to help. Dues were much less then than the $95 that they are now.
I know for a fact that every rural address was sent a letter in both English and Spanish concerning joining the association for their protection. If you bought a vehicle and wrecked it without having insurance and tried to by insurance at the scene of the wreck, what would the agent say?
