CHS Ladycats place second in Blue Eye tournament

This past week, the Cassville Ladycats participated in the Blue Eye Tournament and finished second. Cassville won their first two games but fell in the finals by three points to Pierce City.

"Our kids played really hard, and I am proud of their efforts," said Coach Chris Shore. "We have a young team and this tournament gave us some good experiences that will allow us to grow and get better."

On Nov. 21, the Ladycats opened up the tournament by playing Eureka Springs, Ark. Cassville defeated Eureka Springs 56-45.

Jessica Mitchell led the team with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Jessie Gripka and Brittany Vollenweider also scored in double digits with 10 points each.

Julie Cupps, last year's second team All-Big 8 conference player, finished the game with 8 points and six assists. Abby Munoz with 6 points and Brittany Wilbanks with 2 were the only other Ladycats to add to the final score.

In the semi-finals, on Nov. 22, the Ladycats defeated Blue Eye 42-36. Cupps was the team's point leader with 15 followed by Mitchell with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Vollenweider had 6 points on the night, Gripka and Munoz had 3 points each, and Gabby LeCompte had 2 points. With the victory, the Ladycats advanced to the finals against Pierce City on Nov. 26.

Out of the whole tournament, this was the closest game the Ladycats played, as they fell to Pierce City 48-45. Cupps continued her streak as she scored 23 points and had five steals. Gripka followed with

9 points, Munoz had 7 points and eight rebounds, Mitchell had 4 points and six rebounds, and Vollenweider had 2 points.

For the tournament, Cupps lead the team with 46 points, six assists and five steals. Mitchell followed with 36 points and 26 rebounds. Gripka contributed 22 points and Vollenweider tallied 18 points. Munoz had 16 points and eight rebounds while Wilbanks and LeCompte had 2 points.

The Ladycats will be participating in the Lady Houn' Tournament this week. Cassville's first home game will be played on Dec. 5 against East Newton.
