Young Ladycats win SK tourney

The Cassville Ladycat eighth grade basketball squad captured first place in the Shell Knob Pizza Hut Classic Tournament last week.

In the championship game, Cassville downed Purdy 35-28 to bring home the first place trophy. Cassville came out early and took a 14-4 lead at the quarter. By half-time, the Ladycats led 24-11. Purdy came back tough in the second half, but the Cassville players kept their composure and held onto the win.

The Ladycats' scoring attack was very balanced with Emily Orrell scoring 8, Courtney deRonde contributing 7 and Gail Edie adding 6. Others adding to the point total were Marti Richmiller 4 and Olivia Cline and Darla Stahl, 2 each.

In the semi-final contest, Cassville defeated Kirbyville 40-20. Hannah Elkins had a big night for the Ladycats with 18 points. Other point-getters were Edie 9, deRonde 6, Cline 3, Orrell 2, Stahl 2 and Richmiller 2.

The Ladycats overwhelmed the host Lady Chargers 42-9 in the opening round of play. Ladycat scorers were: Elkins 11, Naomi Beck 8, Orrell 7, Stahl 6, Edie 3, deRonde 2, Richmiller 2 and Mandi Thompson 2.
