The current success of our football team has evidently caused some concern among some of our community, and I feel compelled to express my opinion regarding some recent ads that ran in one of our local papers. Though I respect the opinion of the purchaser of those ads, I am very concerned that we are confusing a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a lifestyle change. At a time when the church is desperately trying to draw more people and families in, is this the kind of message that we want to send out?
Rarely have I seen such a time where students, staff and families alike have been drawn into such a feeling of community and togetherness. The sense of support for these young men is, in my opinion, very uplifting and something that they will remember for the rest of their lives. I was even happy to see more than one church youth group driven to Bolivar in church buses. These families, youth groups and athletes are taking only one Wednesday night out of this year for athletics, and I believe that if we are careful to acknowledge that God is the giver of these good gifts, He will rejoice with us at such an exciting time.
I also do not want to close without saying a huge congratulations to our soccer team and their coaches. They are without a doubt a most special group of young men who are truly a team and one that this community can be very proud of. You are all awesome!
