Camp counselors
Posted Wednesday, June 9, at 4:23 PM
Summer may not officially begin for a few more weeks, but summertime activities are already in full swing. Youngsters have already completed their spring sports leagues and little leaguers are nearly halfway through their season.
Along with sports and other activities, many area youngsters will enjoy a week of camp this summer. With this blog, I would like to recognize the men, women and teens who help make summer camp possible for numerous children across southwest Missouri.
Last week, I had the opportunity to take photos at the Barry County Youth Camp held at Camp Smokey in Roaring River State Park. I was thoroughly impressed with the warm welcome I received from the camp directors, counselors and campers.
I was especially impressed by the young men and women who gave up a week of their summer vacation to volunteer as camp counselor's. These young men and women took their responsibility of keeping the campers safe, disciplined and entertained very seriously.
Some of these young men and women are from our very own county, which speaks volumes for what our area teens are learning and working to achieve. Other counselors traveled from as far away as Springfield to volunteer during the week of camp.
I could tell by the way that the campers responded to their counselors that they both respected and admired these older role models. In turn, the counselors showed that they cared deeply for the children who had been placed in their charge for the week.
I would encourage more of our youth to share their talents and compassion during similar events. Not only will serving as a camp counselor look great on a future college application, but teens will develop memories that they will keep with them throughout their lives.
Summer ball The Cassville Little League began its 2010 baseball season last weekend. Parents, grandparents and other family members packed the Cassville City Park to cheer on their favorite Little League participants. I was there with my husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law to cheer on my brother-in-law, Jordan. Although the team did not win its first game, the kids had a great time out on the field...
Come on down to Pioneer Days Throw on your overalls or jeans and boots and visit the Crowder College Cassville Campus auditorium for some piping hot chili, fiddlin' music and an old-fashioned pie auction on Saturday. Barry County Pioneer Days will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Donations collected and funds raised at Pioneer Days will help a committee of local volunteers provide the Barry County community with a variety of musical performances and programs this summer. ...
A chance to give back Each day, when they go to work, they put their lives on the line to protect the safety of our community. They go by many names, trooper, officer, detective, deputy, but their job is very much the same. They take an oath to serve the public, offer assistance in emergencies and maintain law and order...
Take part in RRSP Opening Day events Don't forget to attend the Roaring River Hatchery Centennial Celebration scheduled to be held the Emory Melton Inn from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The 2010 trout season will open at 6:30 a.m. on Monday, March 1. Arrive early to enjoy hot coffee, which the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce will offer on the banks of the Roaring River stream on opening day morning. The Chamber will also award prizes to the anglers who catch the biggest fish on Monday...
Take the plunge this weekend This weekend several brave men and women will meet at the Central Crossing Taylor Bridge public landing in Shell Knob prepared to plunge into ice cold Table Rock Lake to raise money for a local organization that offers many important community outreach programs...

What is happiness? This morning I watched a "Today" show interview with the mother of a young boy who was set on fire by several of his classmates after he reported that they were attempting to steal his father's bike. The mother begged for people across the country to work to end the violence that seems to be prevalent in the lives of so many young people today. ...
What do you remember? I remember exactly where I was on Sept. 11, 2001. I was working for Bass Pro in Springfield when my supervisor asked my associates and I to gather in the break room. They told us that the United States of America had been attacked. That was so hard to understand. ...
A big impression Over 1,000 local community members attended the visitation and funeral services for Charles Epperly, who passed away on Aug. 30. It is truly impressive to see what a profound impact one man had on our small community. Charles' life touched so many either directly or indirectly through his family...
Chiming in Due to the excessive media coverage that we have already seen, I have been trying to avoid commenting on the death of Michael Jackson. After pondering this subject for some time, I have decided that I must chime in with a few of my thoughts. Out of pure curiosity I recorded the public memorial service that was held for Jackson on Tuesday. When I was watching the recording I began to wonder about some things...
Mark your calendars for fair fun On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to visit Gizmo's Event Center in Wheaton. Although I have kept an eye on the construction of this new multipurpose complex, this was my first opportunity to tour the grandstand and recently completed multipurpose facility...
I can take constructive criticism This week, I received a call from a reader who was very unhappy with me. This caller asked why I did not attend a certain local event. I told the caller that although I did not attend the event in order to obtain a photo, I did request a copy of the event program so that we could recognize individuals involved in the event. This did not impress the caller...
Beautiful competition On Saturday, I attended the Barry County Queen Pageant, which was held at the Crowder College Cassville Center. Although this year's pageant only drew around a dozen contestants, I was impressed by the professionalism with which the pageant was conducted...

It is finally happening! Last weekend, my husband and I drove down to Roaring River State Park to feed the fish and watch the anglers who turned out to enjoy the warm weather and catch and release a few trout. As is our normal custom, after walking around the falls, spring pool and hatchery, we drove down to fishing zone three where we spend a large part of each summer. On the way to zone three, I noticed that crews have begun excavation work for the park's new store...
A generous county On Dec. 18, I had the opportunity help fill gift orders for the Barry County Share Your Christmas program. Volunteering to help pack gift bags for the program had a larger impact on me than I could have ever imagined. I remember being slightly nervous about lending a hand to sort toys, but when I arrived at the Cassville Methodist Church and saw workers carrying armloads of toys inside the fellowship hall I jumped right in to help...
A life that impacted many Last February, I had the opportunity to meet and interview a very special lady who inspired many Barry County students through a teaching career that spanned 40 years. I feel privileged that, even though I was not lucky enough to have her as a teacher, I was able to meet Glenda Ward before she passed away on Oct. 27...
I pledge to help kids be drug-free Next week, children across Barry County will learn lessons that will help, at least some of them, commit to a drug-free life. These lessons will be learned through classroom activities, group pledges, balloon launches, assemblies and other events that will be held in celebration of Red Ribbon Week...
A task worth doing is worth doing well Each year, the Cassville Democrat newspaper staff takes on the large task of completing a Barry County Progress Edition, which includes articles and photos of businesses, schools, cities and organizations from across the county. Although this task is at times grueling, we take pride in creating each story and advertisement for this special edition...
